Develop a simple soil moisture sensor for major crops and soil moisture situations
4.1 ABSTRACT
Soil moisture sensor is an instrument for making rapid measurement of the soil moisture content in the root zone. It is essential tool for many applications, including understanding of soil water dynamics, evaluation of water stress, and validation of soil moisture modelling. Development of sensor was successfully design and assembled. A soil moisture sensor has been developed for measurement of soil moisture and management of irrigation. The development consisted of three distinctive steps (1) design of soil moisture sensor (2) determine the suitable level sensor to sensing the height of water level depletion with respect to soil moisture content and interface with controller and to control water application. (3) development of user friendly device and interface that allows easy control of the system. The sensors give feed back to the electronic circuitry to actuate and de-actuate irrigation pump. The developed soil moisture sensor was tested in field plot irrigated through check basin, furrow, and drip system at 20 and 30 cm depth exactly at the preset position of the level sensors during field test. Water depletion level in modified tensiometer in the check basin method of irrigation was initially less but increases rapidly after 48 hrs of irrigation as compared to drip and furrow irrigation. Average depth of water depletion in all the three methods of irrigation at 30 to 40 cm soil depth was at 50 % of field capacity. The design used a feedback control to measure the soil moisture and on/off the solenoid valve and pump. The developed soil moisture sensor can be successfully used for the automation of irrigation system.
