Seed enhancement is a widely adapted technique to improve seed
performance, especially the rate and uniformity of germination, early seedling
growth and better stand establishment under a wide range of growing conditions.
Efficacy of seed enhancement treatments on seed germination, speed and
uniformity of emergence, vegetative growth, days to flowering (anthesis and silking)
and yield of maize was evaluated under Delhi conditions in Kharif 2009. Seeds of
speciality maize (HQPM-1, VL Amber pop corn, Win orange sweet corn) and
normal maize (Parkash) genotypes were given pre-sowing seed enhancement
treatments, namely, hydropriming (17h/200C); hydropriming (17h/200C) + Thiram
(3 g/kg of seed); low temperature hydration (72h/100C); matrix priming using
hydrogel; halopriming (0.3 % KNO3) priming with fulvic acid (0.1 %), dry dressing
with insecticide (Cruiser : 4ml/kg of seed), fungicide (Thiram : 3g/kg of seed);
biofungicide (Kalisena : 8g/kg of seed) and priming with earth worm-derived
compounds (ceolomic fluid, vermiwash). In addition, seeds were exposed to the
magnetic fields (1000G/2h). Seed enhancement treatments showed beneficial effects
on total emergence, speed of emergence, seedling weight (fresh and dry weight),
plant height and seed yield to varying degrees. These treatments preponed the days
to flowering by 1-2days over control. Most effective seed enhancement treatments
identified were priming with fulvic acid (0.1%), hydropriming (17h/200C), with or
without thiram (3g/kg), KNO3 (0.3 %), priming with ceolomic fluid and exposure to
magnetic field in improving the above traits. Though all genotypes showed
31
significant improvement with treatments, cultivars, Win orange sweet corn and
Parkash were more responsive to seed enhancement treatments with respect to field
emergence, its speed and early seedling growth.
