Description A field experiment entitled ìPerformance of newly released hybrids of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.)
with green gram (Vigna radiata L.) intercropping under rainfed situationî was conducted during Kharif season 2015
at Research Farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding , CCS Hary ana Agricultural University , Hisar. The
experiment consisted of nine treatments viz., T

: S ol e gr e en gr am (MH 421) was laid out in randomised block design
with three replications. The total rainfall received during the crop season was 220.3mm and the crop faced the terminal
stress during the months of August and September.
The intercropping of the pearl millet hy brids with green gram brought out earliness among all the
phenological events except day s taken to emergence as compared to their sole stand. The intercropping of green gram
slightly decreased growth parameters (plant height, dry matter accumulation per plant, leaf area index (LAI ), leaf area
duration (LAD) and total tillers per plant) and y ield attributes (effective tillers per plant, earhead length, earhead girth
and test weight) among the pearl millet hy brids. The LAI attained its peak values at 40 day s after sowing (DAS)
whereas LAD was maximum during 40-60 DAS crop growth period among all the treatments and HHB 197 based
treatments (T
2 & T
6
) shown their comparative superiority over other treatments. The peak value of growth indices i.e.
crop growth rate (CGR) and relative growth rate (RGR) was o btained during 21-40 day s after sowing of crop.
I ntercropping of green gram with pearl millet hy brids in 2: 1 row ratio produced statistically at par grain y ield as
compared to their respective sole hy brid stands. Among all the sole and intercropping treatments, the pearl millet
hy brid HHB 197 intercropping with green gram variety MH 421 (T
6
) exhibited its superiority in respect of pearl millet
equivalent y ield (42.58 q/ha), gross returns (Rs. 54285/ha), net returns (Rs. 30166/ha) and benefit-cost ratio (2.3). The
intercropping of this hy brid with green gram was also found most compatible as indicated by the higher values of the
biological parameters viz., land equivalent ratio (1.29), area time equivalent ratio (1.25), total crowding coefficient
(1.8), aggressivity (0.457), competition ratio (5.88), monetary advantage index (Rs. 6852/ha) and income equivalent
ratio (1.29) as compared to all other pearl millet hy brid based interc ropping sy stems.
