Description Field experiment was conducted at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Regional Research
Station, Karnal during Spring 2013. Twelve treatments of different herbicides and their combinations
comprising of pendimethalin 1.0 and 1.5 kg ha-1 applied PRE, atrazine 0.50 and 0.75 kg ha-1 applied
PRE and POE (15 DAS), metribuzin 140 and 210 g ha-1 applied PRE, tank mix PRE application of
metribuzin 70 g ha-1 + atrazine 0.25 kg ha-1 and pendimethalin 0.75 kg ha-1 + atrazine 0.25 kg ha-1,
atrazine 0.50 kg ha-1 PRE fb 2,4-D Na salt 0.50 kg ha-1 at 40 DAS and hoeing at 20 DAS fb atrazine
0.50kg ha-1 PRE were compared with two HW (20 and 40 DAS), weedy check and weed free
treatment. All the fifteen treatments were arranged in a Random Block Design (RBD) with three
replications. Experimental field was dominated by grassy and broad-leaved weeds with small
infestation of sedges. Results revealed that treatment of hoeing at 20 DAS fb atrazine 0.50 kg ha-1
(PRE to weeds) recorded significantly lower weed population and dry weight of weeds compared to
alone application of atrazine PRE or POE 0.50kg ha-1 at all stages. In herbicidal treatments highest
weed control efficiency (WCE) was recorded in metribuzin 210 g ha-1 PRE, followed by atrazine 0.50
kg ha-1 PRE fb 2, 4-D Na salt 0.5 kg ha-1 at 40 DAS at all stages and minimum with atrazine 0.50 kg ha-
1 POE at 15 DAS. Among herbicidal treatments pendimethalin 0.75 kg ha-1 + atrazine 0.25 kg ha-1 PRE,
recorded significantly higher plant height and crop dry matter at all stages which was at par with
atrazine 0.50 kg ha-1 PRE fb 2,4-D Na salt 0.5 kg ha-1 at 40 DAS, hoeing at 20 DAS fb atrazine 0.50 kg
ha-1 PRE, and two HW (20 and 40 DAS), whereas lowest plant height and plant dry weight was found
in metribuzin 210 g ha-1 PRE. Highest grain yield (63.4 q ha-1) was found in weed free treatment
followed by pendimethalin 0.75 kg ha-1 + atrazine 0.25 kg ha-1 PRE (57.8 q ha-1) and lowest with weedy
check (36.8 q ha-1). Highest return over variable cost, B:C were observed in pendimethalin 0.75 kg ha-1
+ atrazine 0.25kg ha-1 PRE followed by atrazine 0.50 kg ha-1 PRE fb 2,4-D Na salt 0.5 kg ha-1 at 40
DAS 0.5 kg ha-1 at 40 DAS and lowest with weedy check.
