Description The present investigation entitled “Studies on withholding irrigation and harvesting time on
shelf life of garlic (Allium sativum L.)” was conducted at Research Farm, Department of
Vegetable Science and in Post-harvest Laboratory, Department of Horticulture, CCS Haryana
Agricultural University, Hisar during 2013-14. Five levels of withholding irrigation, i.e., 35, 28,
21, 14 and 7 days before harvesting and five levels of harvesting time viz., 150, 157, 164, 171 and
178 days after planting were applied to test the effect of withholding irrigation and harvesting time
on the storage of garlic. The Randomized Block Design was used for field studies and Completely
Randomized Design for laboratory studies with four replications. The observations were recorded
on yield parameters, i.e., weight (g), polar and equatorial diameter of bulb (cm), neck thickness of
bulb and clove (mm), clove diameter (mm), clove length (cm) and number of cloves per bulb,
storage parameters, i.e., physiological loss in weight (%), decay loss on number and weight basis
(%), per cent sprouting on number and weight basis (%), length (cm) and weight (mg) of sprout
and quality parameters, i.e., TSS (%) and sulphur content (%). All the yield, storage and quality
parameters increased with the decrease in days to withholding irrigation and with delay in
harvesting. The yield and storage parameters were recorded maximum in treatments where
irrigation was withheld 7 days before harvesting and harvesting was done 171 days after planting.
The minimum loss in weight, decay loss and sprouting was registered with treatment where
irrigation was withheld 35 days before harvesting and harvesting was done 178 days after
planting.
