Pink bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) was reared on artificial diet prepared from five different cotton cultivars, Ga1 and Ga2 (Gossypium arboreum); Ghr1 (Gossypium hirsutum); Ghb1 and Ghb2 (Gossypium herbaceum). Dietary ingredients other than cotton seed flour like chickpea flour, wheat germ, dried yeast, casein, amino acid mixture and antibacterial chemicals were kept constant in order to study the effect of these cultivars on growth and development of P. gossypiella. Incubation period (4.7 – 6.1 days), pupal period (5.68 – 6.48 days) and mean adult longevity (17.65 – 21.42 days) varied significantly among the test diets. Maximum fecundity (880 eggs/ 10 pairs) was observed on diet made from Ga1 and maximum per cent hatching (68.17 per cent) was observed on diet made from Ghr1. The maximum per cent larval survival (40.98 per cent) was observed on diet made from Ghr1, per cent pupation (36.13 per cent) and minimum number of larvae diapausing (2.94 per cent) was recorded on diet made from Ghb2. Per cent adult emergence (100 per cent) was same for all five diets.
