Description The present study was undertaken to estimate standard heterosis with
the objectives of exploring possibilities of its commercial utilization and study
of combining ability effects.
The material for the present investigation comprised of 48 hybrids
developed on 3 female parents (testers) using 16 male parents (lines) in a line
x tester mating design along with their 19 parents (3 females and 16 males)
and one standard check (HHH-223). The experimental material was grown at
Cotton Research Station Sirsa, during Kharif 2004 in a randomized block
design with three replications.
Observations were recorded for 11 characters namely, plant height,
days to 50% flowering, number of monopods, number of sympods, number ofbolls
per plant, boll weight, seed index, ginning out turn, lint index, halo
length and seed cotton yield per plant.
The economic heterosis was calculated over standard check HHH-223.
Considerable amount of heterosis were recorded for seed cotton yield and
other related characters under study. The hybrids HS 6 x G cot 12 and HS 6
x Gumbo delta type exhibited heterosis of more than 50 per cent and hence
warrant their further testing over locations for commercial utilization.
The combining ability analyses revealed that both additive and
non-additive variance were present in the expression of all the characters
with former playing the major role for majority of the characters. Among
female parents HS 6 was the best general combiner. In general, none of the
male or female parent was found to possess high gca effects for all the
characters under study. However, considering the economic importance of
various characters LAS 5Red AK, RS 875, SK 663 and Gumbo delta type
among the males and HS 6 among the females may be used for future
breeding programs.
