Description |
Cotton which is also known as white gold has been the principal commercial and cash crop of India since time immemorial. It is a pest loving plant and due to this habit it has become a problematic crop for the farmers. Cotton plants are liable to be attacked by several pests throughout their life spans i.e., early in the season, during seedling stage, mid-season and in the late season during the fruit stage. In the present study leaves (2nd & 6th) of nine cotton genotypes viz. HD418, HD432, HD503 (G.arboreum), H1465, H1464, H1098 (resistant G.hirsutum), H1439, H1463 and H1454 (susceptible G.hirsutum) were taken and studied for soluble carbohydrates (total soluble sugars, reducing sugars), phenolic compounds (total phenolic content, tannins and total flavanoids), macronutrients (potassium and phosphorous), cell wall degrading enzymes (polygalacturonase, pectin methyl esterase, cellulase) and cell wall components (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin) before (healthy) and after the sucking pests attack at 60 days after sowing (DAS) and 68 days after sowing (DAS). After the sucking pests attack, the soluble carbohydrates and total chlorophyll content decreased whereas the total phenolic content, macronutrients, specific activity of cell wall degrading enzymes and cell wall components increased at 60DAS and 68DAS in leaves (2nd & 6th) and the decrease/increase was more in 6th leaf as compared to 2nd leaf suggesting their role in plant defense mechanism against sucking pests. |
