Ashwagandha [Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal], a self pollinating plant, belonging to family
Solanaceae occurs in sub-tropical area, accepted as herbal medicine, known as “Indian Gingseng” for
its rejuvenating properties. Information on seed standards in ashwagandha is neither available in
Indian Minimum Seed Certification Standards nor with National Medicinal Plant Board. In the
absence of definite seed quality parameters, practical difficulties are faced by its end users or farmers
during its seed quality evaluation and/or raising a good crop. Most of the seeds available to the
farmers are spurious in natures which lead to poor crop yield. Being grown in different agroecological
regions ashwagandha has accumulated extensive phenotypic and chemical variation. In
view of the above, present research work was undertaken with the following twin objectives:
1. To develop standards for seed quality parameters
2. To assess the genetic variability using seed and morphological characters
Seeds of ashwagandha (45 seed lots) of recent harvest, one and two year old were collected
from different agro-climatic regions, representing government institutions, seed traders/NGO and
farmers. To attain the said objectives, the methodologies like: ISTA rules prescriptions for other
Solanaceous crops on physical purity, moisture content, seed germination, seed health were applied.
The crop of ashwagandha was raised (late Kharif 2008) at the divisional experimental plot of IARI
New Delhi. The seed and other morphological characters were studied at different stages of crop
growth i.e., from seedling to crop maturity. Some of the major findings are:
* Recommended standards for ashwagandha seeds
Parameters Standard for each class
Foundation Certified
Pure seed percentage (Minimum) 98.0% 98.0%
Inert matter (Maximum) 2.0% 2.0%
Other crops seed (Maximum) None 5/kg
Weed seed (Maximum) None 5/kg
Germination percentage (Minimum) 80.0% 80.0%
*The 20 accessions or genotypes showed significant differences for all morphometric
characters studied except number of secondary branches in root. Mean performance of
genotype inferred that no single accessions were superior for all the traits. The twenty
accessions studied were grouped into five cluster based on residual sum of square value, three
known varieties, higher inter cluster distance and low intra cluster distance.
