The demands for synthesizing new bioactive heterocycles (e.g. oxazolones) expeditiously and in an environmentally benign fashion, pose significant challenges to the synthetic chemists working in the fields of agrochemical research. Microwave mediated syntheses, being a green technology, has become ideal for synthetic chemists. 5(4H)-Oxazolones have been extensively used in synthesis of several biologically active molecules because of their easy availability, accessibility to various modifications and wide range of chemical reactions. In view of biological and chemical importance of oxazolones, the present study was taken to synthesize a series of 2-furyl-4- arylidene-5(4H)-oxazolones under microwaves. Arylaldehyde and furoyl glycine were subjected to microwave irradiation (MWI) at 2.45 GHz for 60 to120 seconds using N, Ndimethyl acetamide (DMAC) as a suitable energy transfer solvent and N,Ndicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) as condensing agent to afford 5(4H) oxazolones. These molecules were characterized using analytical and spectral techniques before further exploration as potential nitrification inhibitors |
