Long chain alkanols (policosanol) were isolated from natural waxes (rice bran wax, lac wax and bees wax) by alcoholic saponification and methanolysis and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Triacontanol (C30) was identified as the major component in rice bran wax and bees wax policosanols. Octacosanol (C28) on the other hand was identified as the major constituent in lac wax. Dotriacontanol (C32) and lower alkanes were also detected in all the three waxes. In rice bran wax, hexacosanol and tetratriacontanol were also detected as minor constituents. Total policosanol yield was higher in lac wax than bees wax and rice bran wax. Saponin concentrate was isolated from fruit pericarp of Sapindus mukorossi (Ritha) by extraction with methanol. Saponin hydrolysate was obtained by acidic and alkaline hydrolysis of saponin concentrate. Saponin and saponin hydrolysates were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (EI-MS). |
