Subject EFFECT OF α-GALACTOSIDASE SUPPLEMENTATION TO GUAR (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) MEAL BASED DIETS IN COMMERCIAL LAYERS

Description An experiment was conducted for 112 days on WL layers (37 to 52 week of age)
fed guar meal (GM) based diets with or without α-galactosidase enzyme supplementation.
Experimental diets include 3% GM (3GMC), 3% GM with α-galactosidase (3GMCE), 3%
GM low (100 kcal/kg) energy (3GMB), 3GMB with α-galactosidase enzyme (3GMBE),
6% GM (6GM) and 6% GM with α-galactosidase (6GME). The summary of the
experiment with regard to egg production, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, egg quality
parameters and serum parameters are narrated below.
The dietary supplementation of α-galactosidase to GM based diets was not effective
(P>0.05) in affecting egg production (EP) during overall experimental period (37-52
weeks). Though the difference was statistically non-significant, supplementation of α-
galactosidase enzyme to 3 GMC or 3GMB diets considerably improved EP (0.56 and
0.80%, respectively) compared to the layers fed the respective diets without the enzyme
supplementation. However, EP was significantly reduced in the low ME diets (3GMB or
3GMBE). There was no significant difference in EP up to 6% GM inclusion with or
without α-galactosidase enzyme. Supplementation of α-galactosidase did not show any
beneficial effect on the bird performance i.e. egg production during the 16 week
experimental period.
Supplementation of α-galactosidase to the GM based diets had no significant
(P>0.05) effect on feed intake (FI) in layers and the FI was not affected by reduction in ME
(100 kcal/kg) in 3GMB compared to 3GMC diet. The overall feed efficiency was
significantly lower in basal diets (3GMB or 3GMBE) compared to 3GMC, 3GMCE, 6GM
or 6GME diets. The α-galactosidase supplementation had no effect on feed efficiency at
either of energy levels except for higher feed found in the fourth FN with enzyme. A
positive weight gain was observed among layers fed control (3GMC, 3GMCE) and low
energy diets (3GMB or 3GMBE) supplemented with or without α-galactosidase to GM
based diets.
The data of overall experiment indicated significance (P0.05) difference on shell thickness. The
overall average of 1.5% mortality was observed in layers fed with or without α-
galactosidase supplementation in guar meal based diets.
Dietary supplementation of α-galactosidase to the GM based diets with or without
ME reduction in commercial layers did not influence the concentrations of total cholesterol,
HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol or VLDL-cholesterol. Based on these
results, it is concluded that, Supplementation of α-galactosidase (2 IU/kg diet) to the
toasted GM based diets did not significantly affect production performance in layers but a
trend of improvement was observed by supplementation of enzyme. Toasted GM could be
included up to 6% level in the diets of commercial layers without affecting the egg
production, feed intake, feed efficiency and egg quality parameters.
