Description The present study was undertaken in Hisar district of Haryana state. Eighty adolescents (40
girls and 40 boys) from the age group of 17-19 years were selected from Hisar city to represent the
urban sample and similarly respondents were selected from Mangali village to represent rural sample.
Total sample constituted of 160 adolescents. Objectives of the present study were to assess knowledge
and perception of adolescents towards domestic violence, to provide awareness programme about
domestic violence and to assess its impact on their knowledge and perception and finally to isolate the
factors affecting domestic violence. The results about knowledge of adolescents towards domestic
violence revealed that at pre-exposure majority of adolescents were aware that dowry is a social issue
which leads to domestic violence. Adolescents had very poor knowledge about socio-demographic
profile of domestic violence. Majority of adolescents (68.8%) reported economic violence as a type of
domestic violence. None of the respondents were aware of year of implementation of domestic
violence acts. Ninety five per cent adolescents knew about the legal reporting of domestic violence to
the police. All of the adolescents considered that women are the main victims of domestic violence.
Majority of adolescents (86.2%) reported that husbands are the main perpetrators of domestic violence
for married women and 71.8 per cent considered son as the main perpetrator for elderly. Results about
perception of adolescents towards domestic violence revealed that alcoholism, extra/pre marital
relationship and dowry were perceived as the major causes of domestic violence by both rural and
urban adolescents and received 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranks. Both rural and urban adolescents perceived stress,
anger outburst and suicidal thoughts as the major consequences of domestic violence faced by the
victims. More than 70 per cent adolescents believed that name calling, anger outburst and eve-teasing
occur daily in the families.
Results about impact of awareness programme revealed that there was gain in knowledge of
adolescents towards every aspect of domestic violence and awareness programme had a good impact
on knowledge of adolescents. Adolescents gained detailed knowledge about laws and year of
implementation, types of domestic violence, victims, perpetrators, and nature of domestic violence.
Change in perception of adolescents towards domestic violence was also noticed after awareness
programme and this might be due to the knowledge they gained from awareness programme.
Knowledge and perception of adolescents was assessed on the basis of gender, locale, family
income and caste. Results of the study shows that no major differences were found in the responses of
girls and boys; rural and urban adolescents; higher caste and lower caste and family income.
