Description A field experiment was conducted in farmer’s field at Veerapur village,
Sidlaghatta taluk of Chikkaballapur district during kharif 2013, to study the effect of soil
and foliar application of zinc and boron on quality and yield of mulberry leaves (Morus
alba L.). Soil of the experimental site was sandy clay loam. The experiment was laid out
in randomized complete block design with 12 treatments replicated thrice.
The experimental results indicated that significantly higher plant height (179.53
and 162.14 cm), higher number of leaves per branch (32.47 and 25.87), more number of
branches per plant (16.87 and 15.13) and higher yield (64.30 and 63.07 t/ha/yr) was
recorded during first and second crop, respectively in treatment receiving RDF+FYM
along with 5 kg zinc and 2 kg boron to soil. Among the treatments, application of
RDF+FYM along with 10 kg zinc to soil recorded significantly higher zinc content in soil
(1.87 and 1.74 ppm) and in leaf (57.33 and 45.93 ppm) during first and second crop,
respectively. The boron content recorded significantly higher in treatment receiving
RDF+FYM along with 5 kg zinc and 2 kg boron to soil. Whereas, the boron content (66
and 58.77 ppm in first and second crop, respectively), higher reducing sugar, nonreducing
sugar, total sugar and crude fibre content in leaf was recorded significantly
higher in treatment receiving RDF+FYM along with soil application of boron at 1 kg/ha
and 2% foliar spray of borax. The lower zinc, boron and quality parameters of leaf were
recorded in control plots.
