The present study was conducted at the Division of Fruits and Horticultural Technology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi during 2011-12. Fifteen mango cultivars namely Amrapali, Bhadauran, Dushehari, Irwin, Husnara, Janardan Pasand, Langra, Mallika, Neelum, Primor de Amoreira, Pusa Arunima, Sensation, Tommy Atkins, Totapuri Red Small and Zill were characterized for their flowering and fruiting behaviour. Dushehari, Langra and Primor de Amoreira had very early flowering i.e. before 10th February. However, Irwin and Husnara had very late panicle initiation i.e. after 3rd March. Totapari Red Small, Pusa Arunima and Janardan Pasand had early flowering i.e. during 10- 20th February. Whereas, Zill Tommy Atkins, Sensation, Neelum, Mallika, Amrapali and Bhadauran initiated panicles emergence during 21st February to 3rd March. The maximum duration of flowering was noticed in Primor de Amoreira (41.5 days). However, the minimum duration of flowering was noticed in Husnara (13.0 days) followed by Irwin (14.5 days). Flowering duration was more than 20 days but less than 30 days in Amrapali, Sensation, Bhadauran Mallika, Totapari Red Small and Janardan Pasand. Total number of flowers ranged between 133.30 in Bhadauran to 506.10 in Tommy Atkins. In general, per cent hermaphrodite flowers were less in early emerged panicles compared to late emerged panicles in all the parental mango cultivars. Per cent malformation ranged between 0.0% in Bhadauran to 31.86% in Neelum. Amrapali and Dushehari had more than 20 percent malformation. The flowering duration had significant positive correlation with days required for 50% bloom, per cent hermaphrodite flowers. Per cent hermaphrodite flowers had negative correlation with total flowers and pollen viability. Total number of flowers showed significant positive correlation with per cent male flowers but negative correlation with hermaphrodite flowers percentage. A scheme of hybridization was developed on the basis of flowering duration employing parental mango cultivars. The effective period of mango hybridization using diverse parental mango cultivars was found to be from 3rd week of February to middle of March.
