Description The present study entitled “Supply Chain Management in Fruit and Vegetable Markets in
Haryana State: A Comparative Analysis” was undertaken in Hisar and Karnal district of Haryana to
compare the marketing efficiency of fruits and vegetables supply chain; to analyse the factors
influencing the efficiency of supply chain and to identify the problems of producers transacting under
both the supply chains. For the present study a sample size of 200 respondents was taken and Modified
Acharya method, Percentage and Garrett ranking techniques were employed as the analytical tools.
The findings of the study revealed that, the modern supply chain (MSC) for fruits and
vegetables was more efficient than the traditional supply chain (TSC) for both the fruits and vegetables.
The index of marketing efficiency was found to be 1.06 in MSC of vegetables as against the 0.77 in
TSC, whereas for fruits the marketing efficiency index was found to be 2.49 in MSC as compared to
1.99 in TSC. The share of producer in consumer’s rupee was found to be 52 and 43 per cent in MSC
and TSC respectively for vegetables. However, producers share in consumer’s rupee was found to be
70 and 66 per cent in MSC and TSC of fruits. Apart from this, the major factors contributing to
efficiency of MSC were found to be short length of supply chain, packaging and reduced physical loss
in the MSC. Though the producers were benefitted more in MSC but their major problems were found
to be lack of contracting agencies, quantum of purchase and inadequate standardization and grading
facilities as against lack of cold storage facilities, malpractices of buyers and lack of packaging
facilities in TSC. Thus, it was recommended that the government should promote direct marketing
channels, contract farming and also the development of market infrastructure to curtail the inefficiency
of existing markets.
