Description AWT-198
More than 4.5 million farmers own tractors
in India and rollover appear a serious
concern in safety. Very successful step in
lowering the number of rollover deaths was
the addition of ROPS to tractors. However, ROPS are still not a standard piece of
equipment on Indian tractors although several standardization and legislative
implementation have taken place worldwide. Therefore to address the issue and
providing a complete solution to existing
challenges the investigation has been taken
place.
To assess the scenario of ROPS and variation of axle housings design, a questionnaire
survey were conducted. Further categoriz
ation of axle housings and axle housing
Strength Index were determined. Moreover
, an ‘Universal Mounting Fixture (UMF)’
was designed and developed for ROPS retrofitting which incorporate variation in the
cross-sections of ROPS and non uniformity
in the fixing location since many axle
housings do not have square and rectangular sh
ape. In order to maintain International
Standard and for ‘approved’ fitment, a Test Rig was developed to perform Static
testing of ROPS. To accelerate the ROPS retrofitting, a deployable type ROPS was
also designed and fabricated.
The results indicated that none of the manufactures is providing ROPS on Indian
tractor models. Several designs of axle housing exist in the tractor models
manufactured by different companies. Axle housing strength index has been worked
out to be 1.57. Developed Test Rig has been found strong enough to perform static
testing of ROPS. Universal mounting fixture was found capable of satisfying IS
11821 (Part 2): 1992 requirements. It could accommodate size 40 mm × 60 mm to 70
mm × 90 mm of hollow recta
ngular section and 40 mm to
90 mm diameter size of
hollow circular cross sections. The D-ROPS was designed and developed using
hollow circular section. The cross section of fixed post was found to be 88.9 × 7.62
mm whereas 73 mm × 5.16 mm was decided for deployable post. D-ROPS was able
to retrofitting on tractor, thus increasing the overall safety of the operators.
Proper implementation of policies and stride
nt regulation with this engineering
intervention expected to reduce high number of
fatalities of tractor overturn per year.
