Analyses was carried out for genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient
in 73 genotypes including checks and the stable derivatives from the cross ICP94
(Cajanus scarabaeoides ) x Pusa 33 (Cajanus cajan). The analysis was done over the
environments. Genotypic variance was smaller than phenotypic variance for all the
characters studied. Higher PCV along with GCV was recorded for the characters
namely, seed yield/plant, number of pods/plant, SB while relatively moderate values of
PCV and GCV were recorded for PBL (MA), PB and PBL (PB). The high heritability
estimates were observed for days to flowering while moderate value was recorded for
plant height, pods/plant, 100 seed weight, seed yield/plant and days to maturity. High
expected genetic advance was recorded for secondary branches/plant, pods/plant and
grain yield/plant. Grain yield/plant was significantly and positively correlated with plant
height, number of primary branches/plant, number of secondary branches/plant,
pod/plant, days to maturity and days to flowering over the environments. Path
coefficient analysis revealed that the pods per plant and hundred seed weight have
direct influence on seed yield while the characters like no. of primary branches, no. of
secondary branches, plant height, pod bearing length of primary branches influenced
yield indirectly though genotypic effects were greater than those of phenotypic effects.
Based on path coefficient analysis it was concluded that direct selection for pods/plant
and 100 seed weight along with indirect selection for PB/PL, SB/PL, PH, and PBL (PB)
could be effective in improving seed yield per plant.
