Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is an important pulse crop India and it contributes 75 per cent of the total global production. Majority of cultivation area is of rain fed condition. In this condition, uncertainty of soil moisture at sowing time prevails. It affects considerably in germination of seed and establishment of plant. No such seeding system is available to meet the challenges of dry land chickpea production. Bio-fertilizers are very effective in enhancing growth and nitrogen fixation during chickpea production. Considering above facts, a study has been undertaken for development of aqueous fertilizer based seed drill, suitable for chickpea.
Engineering and physical properties were determined for coated and uncoated seed for optimizing design variables. Significant difference has been observed for angle of repose only other parameters under study did not exhibited significant difference between coated and uncoated seed of chickpea. It also implies that a thin layer of coating can be done with bio-fertilizer. Metering mechanism of seeding machine is heart of the system. Furthermore, type of material notably influences mechanical abuses to seed, during metering. In light of above fact, different materials (mild steel, nylon and wood) of metering unit has been tested for visible and invisible damage. Statistically, there was significant difference found in visible damage by coating and type material of metering mechanism. However, interaction of coating and type material was observed non significant with respect to visible damage. Nylon rollers demonstrated least visible damage, irrespective to coating. Pot experiment revealed that seeding depth and soil moisture influences time of emergence extensively. Application of aqua-fertilizer at 5 cm depth at the rate of 8500 l/ha exhibited better emergence. The seed reinforced with bio-fertilizer as coating significantly enhanced yield. The yield of chickpea at the 8500 l/ha with Rhizobium coated and placed at 5 cm depth was recorded upto1800 kg/ha.
