Description |
A field experiment entitled “Performance of mustard, chickpea and fenugreek as intercrop in barley” was conducted during Rabi 2013-14 at barley research area of CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. The experiment comprised of 13 treatments and was laid out in RBD with three replications. Based on the research investigation it was found that all the growth, development and yield characters were significantly influenced by intercrops compared to sole crops of barley, mustard, chickpea and fenugreek. Maximum growth of different intercrops was recorded from 60 to 90 DAS as indicated by plant height, dry matter accumulation, CGR and LAI. Due to inter-crop-competition, plant height of all crops increased compared to their sole cropping, whereas, higher dry matter accumulation, CGR and LAI were recorded with sole crops. Irrespective of row ratios barley intercropped with mustard recorded higher plant height compared to chickpea and fenugreek, whereas, higher dry matter accumulation was with chickpea. Among different row ratios, irrespective of intercrops at all growth stages, highest and lowest values of different growth factors were recorded with 6:3 and 6:1 row ratios. Due to intercropping reduction in barley grain yield varied by 7.2 - 38.6 % with lowest reduction in barley + chickpea (6:1) and highest reduction in barley + mustard (6:3) compared to sole barley (5012 kg ha -1 ). Among intercropping treatments, highest grain yield of mustard (1793 kg ha -1 ), chickpea (570 kg ha -1 ) and fenugreek (1126 kg ha -1 ) were found with their intercropping with barley in 6:3 row ratio, which were 40.4%, 51.0% and 46.2% less than their sole crops, respectively. Among intercrops, mustard with positive aggressivity values was found more aggressive and competitive. While chickpea and fenugreek were dominated by barley and same was indicated by their negative aggressivity values. Intercropping of barley + mustard (6:3) provided highest barley equivalent yield (7935.7 kg ha -1 ), net return (Rs. 66333 ha -1 ) and B: C (2.90) with LER (1.21), ATER (1.19), followed by barley + fenugreek (6:3). |
