Contract farming
is defined as a system for the production and supply of
agricultural or horticultural produ
ce under forward contracts between
producers/suppliers and buyers.
Contract farming offers
the advantage of reduced
capital investment, reduced risk of price
fluctuation, guaranteed returns and provision
of technical assistance to the farmer. Gherkin industry in India is primarily
concentrated in the three southern states of Karnatak
a, Andhra Pradesh (AP) and
Tamil Nadu, Karnataka accounts for almost 60 percent of the gherkin production.
Tamil Nadu and AP each account for 20 per cent.
Performance for gherkin contract farming was ranked best by the respondents
with regard to assured income, timely availability of quali
ty inputs, assured price and
ready market, getting transport arrangement
and increased employment at village
level.
The respondents preferred gherkin cr
op because of high profit. The overall
analysis indicated that there existed incr
eased changes in living standards, social,
home and material possession
under socio-economic impact.
Cent per cent of the respondents felt
that gherkin farming provide employment
opportunities to a larger extent. A vast ma
jority of the respondents (98.3%) indicated
that the gherkin farming was of more pres
tigious compared to other types of crop
cultivation.
About 98.3 per cent of the respondents
indicated that the effluents from
gherkin farming affect the ecosystem to
some extent. 92 percent of the respondents
felt that the Salinization of land affects to
some extent due to gherkin contract
farming.
Majority of the employees (90%) felt that due to gherkin farming farmers
standard of living was improved. It also pr
ovide assured price for the farmers (77%),
eliminates middlemen (53%), provide good guidance (20%).
Labour scarcity, lack of insurance cover and high cost of labour (ranked 1, 2
and 3 respectively) were the major cons
traints faced by the gherkin growers.
The study concluded that all the farmer
s in the study area e
xpressed that they
will continue to grow gherkins with the sa
me company again and again. In order to
involve more farmers under contract farming
crop insurance is covered for gherkin or
Government support is necessary for effec
tive management of contract farming of
gherkin.
