Citrus is regarded as a salt-sensitive crop, but its growth and yield response to salinity is affected by variety, rootstock, and duration of salt exposure, irrigation management, soil type, and climate. This study quantified the effect of graded level of NaCl on growth and dry mass production of different rootstocks. The pot experiment was conducted with four levels of NaCl i.e 0.0 mM NaCl, 50 mM NaCl, 100 mM NaCl and 200 mM NaCl on five different citrus rootstocks viz., rough lemon Attani-2 Troyer citrange, sour orange and billikhichlli during 2008-2010. Results revealed that irrigation of seedlings of all rootstocks with higher concentration of NaCl (200 mM) had exerted the maximum detrimental effect on plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and dry mass production in all rootstocks. The minimum increase in stem diameter and the maximum defoliation was recorded in Troyer. The maximum reduction in fresh weight of shoot and in root was recorded in Attani-2 with application of 200 mM NaCl. In Attani-2, root to shoot ratio shows decreasing trend after 50 mM NaCl. However, in sour orange, rough lemon, billikhichlli and Troyer it increases upto higher NaCl concentrations. Salinisation enhanced MII and reduced RWC and chlorophyll fractions in all citrus rootstocks. At higher salinity level, the maximum improvement in SOD and POD activities was found in Troyer. Sour orange had minimum improvement in SOD 25 activity. The maximum enhancement in leaf proline content was recorded in Attani- 2. Sodium and Chloride accumulation in leaf tissues increased with increasing level of NaCl in all genotypes. However, Attani-2 increased more Na+ in leaf tissue. The maximum increase Cl- was noticed in Troyer and the minimum in rough lemon at 200 mm NaCl. Chloride accumulation in root tissues increased minimum in sour orange and Attani-2. Furthermore, the maximum improvement in K was found in rough lemon. |
