An experiment in which the response is assumed to depend on the relative proportions of the ingredients present in the mixture and not on total amount of the mixture is called the mixture experiment. The component proportion in a mixture experiment cannot vary independently since they are constrained to a fixed quantity (unity). Sometimes the response in mixture experiments depends not only on the proportion of mixture components present in the mixture but also on the process conditions. Thus the mixture experiments when conducted with process variables are called mixture experiments with process variables. In these experiments process variables do not form any portion of the mixture but whose levels when changed could affect the blending properties of the ingredients. Sometimes the mixture experiments are costly and the experiments are to be conducted in smaller number of runs. A method of construction of efficient mixture experiments with process variable in minimum number of runs by using the projection matrix has been developed. Also mixture designs with process variables have been developed for 3, 4 and 5 components mixture with one process variable. Sometimes we come across experimental data on response for a controllable variable. It is then interest to optimize one or more responses depending upon the objective of the experimenter. A methodology has been developed for obtaining the optimum combination of ingredients in mixture experiments with process variables by using dual optimizing technique with minimum variability and desired/maximum mean yield. This has been illustrated with a suitable example.
