Description Thesis titled “Effect of Different Levels of Sewage Sludge on Cereal Crops and Soil Health” submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science by Abubaker M. M. Outhman.
The study “Effect of different levels of sewage sludge on Cereal crops and soil health” was carried out during 2012-2014 in the School of Forestry and Environment, Sam Higgonbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Allahabad, (U.P) India. The study aims to investigate the effect of sewage sludge on soil properties at two depths (0-15 and 15-30 cm)and cereal crops. The applications ofdifferent amount of sewage sludge on field is one of the most common way to reduce the sewage sludge safely and useful ways and reclaim the soil by use of phytoremediation. The doses sewage sludge used in the study were0.00,4.00,8.00, 12.00 tha-1, two cereal crops were grown as test crops Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.,)and Wheat (Triticum astivum). The impact on physical and chemical properties of soil were analysis as the bulk density, particle density, percentage pore space, soil structure, pH, EC, % OC, N P K and heavy metals (Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu)in soil. The results were found the maximum value of the bulk density was 1.36 g/cc in T0 , particle density was 2.43g/cc in T3 and T7, percentage pore space was 65.43 in T3 and T7, the maximum value of pH was 7.74 in T0, EC was 1.48 dSm-1 and % OC , N P K are satisfactory and as increasing the percentage with increase the dose of sewage sludge, the soil content of heavy metals that study covered are (Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu) and uptake by plants were found increasing with increase of dose of sewage sludge in post harvest Soil as compare with control and the highest concentration of heavy metals was in high dose of sewage sludge. The impact of applied sewage sludge on the plant is was clear, the plant height weight of grains percent( N P K )are increasing with increasing of dose and the uptake of heavy metals is increase in both crops by increase of sewage sludge doses. Obviously the investigate show the Correlation between effect and Difference sewage sludge apply on the soil properties and plant response.
