Description To study the growth pattern, flOwering and
fruiting behaYiour in different varieties of mango,
twemty cultiyars comprising seven from West India,
four from North India and nine from South India were
selected. TWo hundred basic terminals were tagged
raQdomly after harvest of the crop in the month of
June for aUbsequent monitoring for a period of three
years.
The behaTiour of theae shoots in respect of
linear growth, girth and number of leayes produced
on each shoot durin~ each flush of differentiated and
undifferentiated normal and extended shoots was s'fhe floweriD9 aDd fruiting behaviour of the
differentiated shoots was Btudied for per oent
flo_riD9 aDd 'fruiting paniolea, fruit set, fruit
drop aDd fruit retention BO as to understand the bearing
behaviour of these oultivara.
~e proportion of vegetative shoots in the
aeooDd year were hl9h in 'Rajapuri', 'Khandeshi
Boraaio', 'Alphonso', 'Banarasi Langra', Calcutta
Lan9ra' and 'Badami Vashi'. SUoh type of shoots were
relatively less in most of the Sou~~ Indian varieties.
~e ~ent of normal shoots vas higher than their
exteDded oounterparts in 'Rajapuri', 'Khandeshi Borasio',
(Alphonso', 'Vanraj', 'Calcutta Langra', 'Fazli',
'Ba.samt Vuhi' aDd 'Yakut Rumani'. The vegetative
9rovth of normal as well as extended shoots was higher
during March, September and Ootober in most of the
varietiea under study.
~e teDdenoy of shoots to grew vegetatively
fro. September to ~ecember and differentiate into
flower b1I4 ill the following January i. e ., having
short quiBcent period was much pronounced in most of
the SOUth Indian varieties particularly 'Neelum',
Badami Model' aDd 'TOtapurJ.' and to a , certain extent in 'Keaar' of the weQrn India. !be proportion of shoots initiating vegetative
growth in the first year and flowerlng ln the second year
was high in 'Alphonso', ,Dadamio', 'Banganpalli Blg' and
'M\llgO&' •
'lbe flowered shoots of flrst year which remained
Y8getative in the second year were hlgh in 'Vanraj',
'I1adamio' and 'Ke.ar' of Western India" low 'in 'Alphonso',
'Karanjio' and 'Raj apuri , of ~t} India and absent in
all the Horth Indian varieties. Slmilarly for flowered
.hootD of first year which d~fferentiated into flower
buds in the second year also, were high in 'Vanraj' and
MUlgoa' only. Such type of shoots ,were not recorded in
any of the North Indian varieties.
The relative proportion of monitored shoots in
respegt of either differentiating into flower bud or
r_cdning vegetative d1m1nished in the s~sequent year
giving an indication of cyclic growth pattern.
'lbe extent of perfect flower was relatively high
in 'Dadamio'. 'Rajapuri', 'Vanraj', 'Banarasi Langra',
'Calcutta Langra', 'Badami Vashi', 'Badami MOdel' and
'Neelum' yarieties. The proportion of perfect flowers
vas higher in the upper one third part of the panicle.
The fruit set per panicle was higher in 'Dadamlo' ,
'lChandeaM Boruio'. ' Safeda '. 'Badami Vashl', ' Rumani '
and 'Reelam' varieties. The rate of fruit drop assessed afur a"aiDing the 'III&mle' stage was quite high in the
1a1tial three ve!k~ll the varieties under study.
'lbe study thus pOinted out that it was not only
the iDi.iation of vegetative and reproductive growth
and its pattern. but a number of inter related factors
such .s proportion of shoots flowering in the first
year and also in the subsequent years coupled with
moderate vegetative growth. proportion of flowering and
fruiting paDicles. fruit set, fruit drop and fruit retenti,on
till maturity are important in confirming the regular
bearing behaviour of the mango varieties.
OUt of the 14 mango F1 hybrids evaluated for
their tree. ,leaf. flotrer and fruit characteristics, two
hybrids viz., Mee1um x Alphonso stock-27 and Neelum x
Kesar stock-29 were very promising • A wide genetiC
vari.tion alongwith appreciable he~ero6is was obse rved
in the parental as well aB hybrid combinations
