Description |
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the yield and feeding value of hydroponics barley fodder (HBF) in growing lambs. HBF was produced in a machine under controlled environment of 6 day cycle. In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) and metabolizable energy (ME) were determined using in vitro techniques. In a growth trial of 120 days, 18 growing Deccani ram lambs of 3 months age (13.0±0.42) were randomly divided into 3 groups with 6 animals in each and allotted to their respective rations. Three iso nitrogenous rations were formulated, in which the control ration (T1) was prepared by using roughage (chopped sorghum stover) and concentrate at 60:40 ratio and the other two experimental rations were formulated by replacing 50 per cent (T2) and 75 per cent (T3) of concentrate mixture with HBF. The yield of HBF recorded was 7.5kg per one kg barley seed sprouted. The per cent of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), crude fibre (CF), nitrogen free extract (NFE), total ash (TA), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin values were 12.00, 95.70, 16.22, 3.42, 14.50, 61.56, 4.30, 32.50, 13.72, 19.18, 16.50 and 2.32, respectively. The calcium and phosphorus contents were 0.31 and 0.41per cent, respectively. The trace elements copper, manganese, zinc and iron were 11.50, 14.50, 23.00 and 88.00ppm, respectively. The gas volume produced during 24 h of incubation of 200 mg HBF was 56 ml. IVDMD (%), IVOMD (%) and ME (MJ/kg DM) were 66.12, 72.21 and 10.74, respectively. In the growth trial, supplementation of HBF had no influence on fortnight body weights but 50 per cent replacement of concentrate mixture with HBF had significantly (P |
