An experiment was carried out during kharif and rabi seasons of 2014 -15 at College of Horticulture, Udyangiri, Bagalkot to study the effect of pruning intensities and time of pruning on growth ,yield and quality parameters of guava cv. Sardar under different planting densities. The maximum yield per plant (6.18 kg/plant) was recorded from unpruned shoots under wider spacing of 6 x 6m (M6S4) followed by (5.93 kg/plant) unprunned shoot under medium spacing of 6 x 3 m (M5S4) during rainy season. Whereas, in winter season the maximum (7.07 kg/ plant) yield per plant was recorded in very light pruned shoots under wider spacing of 6 x 6 m (M6S3). But the maximum total yield per hectare (17.79 t/ha) was recorded from very light pruned shoots under closer spacing of 2 x 2 m (M1S3) followed by (16.71 t/ha) light pruned shoots under closer spacing (M1S2). The highest cost benefit ratio was (1:3.25) recorded in guava plants with very light pruned shoots under closer spacing of 2 x 2 m (M1S3). For higher productivity, medium spacing such as 6 x 3 m, 3 x 3 m spacing found to be better with quality of fruits by light annual pruning. Spacing only had significant influence on yield of guava while, time of pruning and its interaction with spacing were found to be non significant. Among the different spacing, the maximum fruit yield per plant (4.65 kg/plant) was recorded in wider spacing of 6 x 6 m (M6) which was on par (4.47 kg/plant) with 6 x 3 m spacing (M5) during rainy season and similar trend was observed in winter season also. The maximum total yield per hectare (16.41 t/ha) was recorded in closer spacing of 2 x 2 m (M1) followed by (12.04 t/ha) 3 x 2 m spacing (M2). It was found that annual light pruning (30-45 cm shoot length) could be completed within the onset of Monsoon preferably during April or May for increasing bearing area and getting quality fruits. |
