Description The investigation on heterosis and combining ability in brinjal was undertaken during 2014-2015 at the Department of Vegetable Science, College of Horticulture Bagalkot. Thirty six hybrids derived by crossing twelve lines with three testers were evaluated along with parents and commercial checks in randomized block design (RBD). The data generated was subjected to line × tester analysis.
The variances due to genotypes varied significantly for all the characters studied. The mean performance of majority of the hybrids was better than the parents for almost all the qualitative and quantitative parameters. The magnitude of heterosis over mid parent, better parent and the commercial checks viz., EPH-718 and Mahy super-10 was very high in desirable direction for all characters studied.
The estimates of heterosis in per cent over both the commercial hybrids i.e. EPH-718 and Mahy super-10 ranged from -26.42 to 6.98 % for days taken to 50% flowering, -23.24 to 77.86 % for total fruit yield per plant, -67.74 to 38.13 % for fruit borer incidence and -96.76 to 89.93 % for shoot borer incidence. The hybrids CBB-6 × BSR-112, CBB-8 × BSR-112 and CBB-25 × BSR-112 in order of merit, exhibited maximum standard heterosis for fruit yield per plant over both checks.
The studies on combining ability revealed that, dominance variance was higher than additive variance for majority of characters indicating preponderance of non-additive gene action, thus these characters could be improved further through recurrent selection or heterosis breeding. The lines CBB-8, CBB-6, CBB-32, CBB-3, CBB-1and CBB-5 in order of rank were identified as good general combiners for overall characters studied. Similarly the crosses, CBB-1 × BSR-112, CBB-47 × Matti Gulla and CBB-32 × Matti Gulla were identified as good specific combiners for fruit yield per plant.
Study revealed that, among the parents CBB-32 and CBB-1were good general combiners and CBB-1 × BSR-112, CBB-32 × BSR-112 and CBB-32 × CO-2 were good hybrids for traits related to earliness. From productivity point of view, the lines CBB-6, CBB-8 and CBB-32 have been identified as good general combiners and CBB-6 × BSR-112, CBB-8 × BSR-112 and CBB-25 × BSR-112 have been identified as best F1 hybrids among thirty six F1 hybrids developed.
