Description A Thesis titled “Development and Ergonomical Assessment of Innovative Devices for Harvesting of Rose (Rosa Indica) and Marigold (Tagetess) Flowers” was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Family Resource Management by Nimisha Suryavanshi.
The focus of the present investigation was to study the ergonomical cost of the male and
female flower harvesters who were using the existing devices for the harvesting of rose and
marigold flowers. The sample size for the study comprised of total 106 flower harvesters
out of which 53 male and 53 female who were involved in harvesting of flowers on the
field of rose and marigold. The study was conducted in villages of Allahabad, Uttar
Pradesh. Focused group discussion, ergonomical assessment, observation schedule,
interview schedule, body map, and techno innovative devices were used as a tool for
collecting data. It was found that majority of the worker were facing physiological problem
like pain in different body parts. Bleeding and cuts in different body parts was also a major
problem of flower harvesters. According to the study their energy expenditure of male
marigold flower harvesters was 10.68 and the female marigold flower harvesters was 11.8
whereas rose male flower harvesters was 10.36 and the female marigold flower harvesters
work with 11.16 energy expenditure. To assess the impact of the developed devices on the
ergonomical cost of flower harvester’s innovative devices were made, three types of gown,
three types of gloves for the safety of hands as well as three types of bamboo baskets to
carry the flowers on the field were developed. These techno innovative devices were more
comfortable than the existing devices because these were prepared according to the need
and to protect their whole body, improved the quality of flower harvesting, devices were
safe, also saved time for flower harvesting. They were feel less pain in body and less
frequency of postural changes. After adoption of all these devices and see the good results
all harvesters feel their increased self-respect whereas it was no matter for them when all
of them use existing devices. They save their money because they work more so they earn
more by the use of all devices and when they use their existing devices they earn and save
less money amount. The devices were highly appreciated by everyone. They use and not
ready to return the devices and requested to launch them in to market very soon.
