Description |
The present study was undertaken in 13 animals (sheep and goats) presented with fractures of long bones at Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, Campus Veterinary Hospital, College of Veterinary Science, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, Telangana. The animals selected for the study were divided into two groups of 6 animals in group I and 7 animals in group II irrespective of breed, sex and age. Out of the 13 animals, 11 had open fractures and remaining 02 had closed fractures. The types of fractures encountered in this study were 6 oblique fractures, 5 transverse fractures and 2 comminuted fractures. All the long bones except humerus and femur were included in the present study as external skeletal fixation was suitable in treatment of fractures of these bones i.e., metacarpal, tibia, metatarsal and radio-ulna. In the present clinical study, following routine clinical examination, radiographs were obtained in two orthogonal views (medio-lateral and antero-posterior) for diagnosis, assessment and planning of treatment. Limited open approach in one animal and closed approach in 12 animals was adopted. For reduction of fracture fragments, in one animal hanging limb technique with the animal in dorsal recumbency was adopted. In the remaining cases the animals were positioned in lateral recumbency with the affected limb down. The animals of Group I were treated with Free-form External Skeletal Fixation (ESF) using Epoxy putty as connecting bar and the animals of Group II with Free-form external skeletal fixation using Acrylic compound as connecting bar. To prevent post-operative infection, Inj.Ampicillin-Cloxacillin was administered at the rate 10mg/kg body weight intramuscularly daily for one week and Inj. Meloxicam was administered post-operatively for pain relief at the dose rate of 0.25 mg/kg intramuscularly daily for three days. Cleaning with normal saline and dressing of the pin entry points on the skin with 5% povidone-iodine gauge pads was found effective in keeping the sites clean and dry. Clinical evaluation was routinely carried out at periodical intervals for swelling, exudation, weight bearing and stability of the fixator in all the animals belonging to groups I and II. Post-operative radiographs were obtained immediately after surgery on the 15th, 30th and 45th day post-operatively and on later dates whenever needed. Post- operative radiographs taken immediately after the surgical treatment revealed good fracture reduction and immobilization of the fracture site in all the animals. Post-operative radiographs showed progressive healing of the fractures. The results of the present clinical study indicated that both acrylic and epoxy putty connecting bars served well for the purpose of free-form external skeletal fixation for treating the fractures of long bones in sheep and goats. The present clinical study did not highlight any differences between the two connecting bars as far as the clinical, radiographic and pain score studies were concerned. It was therefore concluded that both the epoxy and acrylic connecting bars found to be suitable for free-form external skeletal fixation in sheep and goats. Therefore there was no difference between two connecting bars used in the study. |
