Description "Cotton occupies the place of pride in Indian agriculture and its
economy by earning valuable foreign exchange. Cotton fibre is one of
the most important raw material for the textile industries as it accounts
for more than 60 per cent of all textile fibres consumed by the Indian
textile industries and also important source of providing employment to
millions of people.
Cotton is predominantly self pollinated and often cross pollinated
crop (Simpson, 1954). It has a tap root system, leaves are simple,
petiolate, phyllotaxy of leaves is 1/3 in Asian cotton and 3/8 in
American and Egyptian cotton. Cotton belongs to the genus
Gossypium which is one among the eight genera under tribe
gossypieae of family Ma/vaceae. This dicotyledonous genus comprises
approximately 50 species, out of which 45 are diploid and five are
allotetraploid (Fryxell, 1992)."
"Ten diverse genotypes crossed in diallel fashion to obtain fourty five F,s (for
study1ng heterosis and combining ability) and the same ten genotypes crossed with
two testers vvth extreme phenotype to obtain 20 crosses (for inherrtance studies)
were used to assess the heterosis of parents. to estimate the general and specific
combining ability of parents and crosses and to study the nature of genetics of yield,
yield components and fibre quality characters. These two sets of crosses along wrth
their respective parents were sown in Randomized Complete Block Design
replicated thrice and observations on plant height (em), Number of bolls planr'.
seed cotton yield planr'. lint yield planr'. chlorophyll content (mg g·'). days to 50 %
flowering, ginning out turn (%), 2.5% span length (mm), Micronaire value (mg
inch'1
) , uniformity ratio(%), maturity GO-€fficient and oil content(%) were recorded.
ConsKJerable variability existed among the genotypes, parents and crosses
for all the characters studied as observed from the significant mean squares due to
genotypes. The mean squares due to parents vs hybrids were significant for all the
characters except micronaire value and oil content allowing the comparision of the
hybrKJs vvth the parents for the different characters by estimating heterosis. Both
GCA and SCA were found to be important for the inheritance of various traits
studied as their mean squares were significant. The gca effects and sea effects
showed wide variation in the level of significance for different characters. The test of
epistasis indicated its presence for all characters. Both additive and dominance
component were observed for all the characters. any how the addrtive component
were predominant for all the characters under study. The parents AKH-9913, BBP-9
and AKH-8828 were identified as the promising parents as they had high gca and
addrtive genetic variance for yield and most of the yield contributing trarts.
Considering high per se performance, high positive significant sea effect and the
extent of useful heterosis the crosses, AKH-9312 x BBP-9, AKH-9312 x AKH-1174
and BBP-9 x AKH-1174 were identified as the promising crosses for seed cotton
yield, lint yield and fibre strength for their exploitation directly for heterosis breeding."
