Description |
"Garlic (Allium sativum L.) belongs to fami ly Alliacae. The name garlic is derived from old English word gar, which means presumably referring to the clove. It's origin is Central Asia (Rai and Yadav, 2006). The plant is bulbous, hardy perennial, producing narrow and flat leaves. The bulb comprises a number of segments ca lled cloves which range from 16 to 50 and are enclosed in a th in sheath of white and red colour." The present investigation entitled ""Effect of phosphorus and potassium on growth, yield and quality of garlic"" was carried out during rabi season of the year 2008-2009. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) with four levels of phosphorus P0 - 0 Kg vi ha·', p1 - 75 Kg ha""1, P2 - 100 Kg ha·' and P3 - 125 Kg ha·' and four levels of potassium Ko- 0 Kg ha·', K, - 25 Kg ha·' , K,--50 Kg ha·' , K,- 75 Kg ha·' and replicated four times with sixteen treatment combinations. An obse!Vations in respect of growth parameters yield and yield attributing characters, quality parameters and nutrient uptake were recorded . The results of this experiment revealed that, the growth parameters like plant height, leaves planr', neck thickness of plant, dry matter planr' were obse!Ved significant at different levels of phosphorus and potassium. It was found that. maximum va lues of these characters were recorded with an application of 125 Kg phosphorus ha·' (P3) and 75 Kg potassium ha""' (K3) respectively_ The fresh and cured bulb yield and yie ld attributes like weight of bulb, size of bulb, clove index, size of clove and cloves bulb_, were found to be maximum with an application of 125 Kg phosphorus and 75 Kg potassium ha·1. An application of 89.13 Kg phosphorus ha·' and 67.66 Kg potassium ha-1 was considered as economic optimum dose for obtaining higher yield. As regards to the BC ratio, it was found to be the maximum (1 .12 and 1.22) from the P3 (application of 125 Kg phosphorus ha-1) and K3 (application of 75 Kg potassium ha-1 ) respectively |
