Description "The okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is commercially
important annual vegetable crop in tropical and subtropical parts of the
world. It belongs to family Malvaceae. It is also known as Bhendi or
Lady's Finger. Its tender green fruits are used as a vegetable and are
generally marketed in the fresh condition, but sometimes in canned or
dehydrated form. Okra is rich in vitamins, calcium, potassium and
mineral matters. The nutritional value of okra (per 100 g edible portion)
contains the major elements like moisture (89.6 g), carbohydrate
(6 .4 g), protein (1.9 g), iron (1.5 g), sodium (6.9 g), potassium (10.3 g),
fibre (1.2 g), calcium (66 mg), magnesium (43 mg), phosphorus
(56 mg), sulphur (30 mg), vit-A (88 IU) and vit- C (13 mg)"
"The present investigation, MGenetic variability, correlation and path
analysis in okra (Abe/moschus esculentus (L.) Moench)"" was undertaken in
kharif season, 2011 on the Farm of Chilli and Vegelable Research Unit
(CVRU), Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola in Randomized
Block Design with three replications on fifty genotypes and local varieties
collected from Chilli and Vegetable Research Unit, Dr. PDKV, Akola; National
Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), Akola; Marathwada Agriculture
University, Agril. Botany, Parbhani and Gadchiroli (Korchi).
Analysis of variance indicated significant differences among the
genotypes for different morphological characters. The phenotypic coefficient of
variation (PCV) was higher than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV). The
high values of GCV and PCV observed for primary branches per plant, yield
per plant, yield per hectare, protein content and number of fruits per plant.
High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for yield per
plant, Yield per hectare and leaf area.
The yie ld per plant was significant and positively correlated with
plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of fruiting nodes
per plant, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight and length of fruit.
leaf area , days to first harvest, diameter of fruit and moisture content were
significantly and negatively correlated with yield per plant.
Path coefficient analysis indicated that average fruit weight,
diameter of fruit, plant height, length of fruit, leaf area and number of fruits per
plant showed high positive direct effects as the major yield contributing traits,
for enhancing the yield of okra.
Based on direct and indirect effects of different yield components
on yield , it would be rewarding to give stress on the number of fruits per plant,
number of fruiting nodes per plant, average fruit weight, length of fruit and
plant height, while formulating selection indices for improvement of yield in
okra."
