Description |
Thirty onion cultivars obtained from different geographic regions were evaluated for their Morphological and biochemical variability and genetic diversity in bulb characters and storage quality. Significant difference were observed among the onion cultivars for these characteristics indicating high magnitude of variability in the genotypes under study. The estimates of phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were higher as compared to genotypic coefficients of variation (GCV). Very high heritability was obtained for the character dry matter (%) followed by TSS (%). High heritability value with high genetic advance was observed for the characters yield, bulb weight total losses (%) Sprouting losses (%) and bolting (%) indicating high additive genetic variance and hence these characters can be improved by selection.
