Description |
Bovine tuberculosis (BTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) is an OIE listed economically significant infectious disease of cattle because of trade restriction and serious public health consequences. A total of 105 blood samples, 105 pre-scapular lymph node (PSLN) aspirates and 15 nasal swab samples were collected from randomly selected cattle (n= 105) of gaushalas of Haryana. By SIDT testing, 1/105 (0.95 %) cattle was found as doubtful/inconclusive but it was found positive by interferon gamma (IFN-γ) assay. By IFN-γ assay, 23 (21.90 %) cattle were found positive including 8 (7.61 %) cattle which were only positive by IFN-γ assay. In polymerase chain reaction (PCR), 2 (1.90 %) PSLN aspirates were found positive for M. bovis which were also positive by IFN-γ assay and antibody detection test. In antibody detection test, 69/100 (69 %) samples were found positive. Of which, 4 % were only positive for BTB, 27 % samples were positive for non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM)/Avian TB and 38 % samples were positive for BTB and NTM/ Avian TB both. A total of 14 % samples were positive by IFN-γ assay and antibody detection test (either BTB or NTM/ Avian TB) both in combination. Only 1 % samples were positive by IFN-γ assay and antibody detection test (BTB) in combination, 5 % samples were positive by IFN-γ assay in combination with antibody detection test (NTM/ Avian TB) and 8 % cases were positive by IFN-γ assay in combination with antibody detection test (BTB and NTM/ Avian TB both).Of all, 55 % samples were only positive by antibody detection test. Of these, 3 % samples were positive for BTB only, 22 % samples were positive for NTM/ Avian TB only and 30 % samples were positive BTB and NTM/ Avian TB both. The comparison of results of SIDT test-IFN-γ assay, IFN-γ assay-PCR and PCR-antibody detection test was statistically significant and found to have 79.05 %, 80 % and 60 % agreement respectively. The results showed BTB is prevalent in cattle population of Haryana state. Timely diagnosis of actual disease burden by using multidisciplinary approach is likely to be needed to segregate the infected animals and restrict transmission to animals and humans.
