Description With the objective of identifying highly stable genotypes
of sorghum and responsiveness over environments (growing periods),
stability analysis was done with eighteen genotypes (A-, B- and Rlines)
adopting the model of Eberhart and Russell (1966).
Experiments were conducted in kharif-2012, late khnrif-2012, semi
rabi-2012 and rabi -20l2-13 at Navsari location. Thirteen characters,
viz., days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, days to
completion of flowering, microscopic observation for pollen sterility
percentage of A-lines and pollen fertility percentage in Band Rlines,
days to physiological maturity, plant height, nO. of leaves per
plant, panicle length, no. of grains per panicle, grain yield per
plant, dry stover yield per plant, 100 grain weight and harvest
index were studied .
Based on the parameters of stability namely; mean,
regression coefficient 'bi' and mean square deviation (S2di), the
genotypes were classified into four groups. The mean squares due

to genotype x environment interactions were significant for plant
height at physiological maturity, days to physiological maturity,
grain yield per plant and dry stover yield per plant. A major
portion of G x E interaction was accounted by the linear component
for these characters. This suggested the possibilities of prediction of
the performance of genotypes with great reliability.
In present study it was revealed that the genotypes 296A,
27 A and 2219B showed stable performance for days to first
flowering and days to 50 per cent flowering, while the genotypes
296A, 27 A, 2219A & B, ICSA467 A, ICSA467B, C43' andC43b
exhibited stable performance for days to completion of flowering.
For the character plant height genotypes 296A & B, 27B, AKMS14B,
2219B, ICSA467B, CS3541 and UPMC503' exerted stable
performance whereas, the genotypes 27 A & B, AKMS14A & B,
PMS28A & B, ICSA467B, CS3541, RS673, UPMC503' and UPMC503b
showed stable p erformance for no. of leaves per plant. The
genotypes 296 A, 27 A, 2219A & B, ICSA467 A, C43' and C43b found to
be stable for days to physiological maturity . For the character
panicle length genotypes AKMS14A & B, ICSA467 A & B, PMS28A &
B, 296B, 27B, 2219B, C43' , C43b, RS673, UPMC503' and UPMC503b
have recorded s table performance, while for no. of grains per
panicle AKMS14A & B, 2219A & B, ICSA467 A & B, RS673,
UPMC503' and UPMC503b showed stable performance. For the
character grain yield per plant genotypes 296A & B, 2219A & B,
ICSA467 A & B, PMS28A & B, RS673, UPMC503' and UPMC503b
showed stable performance whereas, the genotypes 27 A, 27B,
PMS28B, C43' and CS3541 showed stable performance for dry stover

yield per plant. The character 100 grain weight genotypes 27 A & B,
PMS28A & B, ICSA467 A & B, C43', C43b , RS673 and UPMC503'
showed stable performance whereas, the genotypes 27B, C43' and
C43b found to be stable for harvest index .
It was observed that among the genotypes 296A, 27 A and
2219B show average stability over the environments (growing
periods) for the character days to 50 per cent flowering, average
performance for no. of leaves per plant was recorded for the
genotypes 27 A & B, AKMS14A & B, PMS28A & B, ICSA467B,
CS3541, RS673, UPMCS03' and UPMCS03b average performance for
physiological maturity was recorded from the genotypes 296A, 27 A,
2219A & B, ICSA467 A, C43' and C43b the genotypes AKMS14A & B,
2219A & B, ICSA467 A & B, RS673 UPMC503' and UPMC503b
showed stable performance for no. of grains per panicle, while the
genotypes 296A & B, 2219A & B, ICSA467 A & B, PMS28A & B, RS673
UPMC503' and UPMC503b showed stable performance for grain
yield per plant. For the genotypes 27 A & B, PMS28A & B, ICSA467 A
& B, C43', C43b, RS673 and UPMCS03' showed stable performance
for 100 grain weight. For pollen sterility genotype 296A and
PMS28A showed stable performance Over growing periods .
