Description The horticulture crops like fruits, vegetables, flowers, medicinal and
aromatic plants, spices, and plantation crops form a significant part of total
agricultural GDP in the country. The profit figure is an important indicator of
managerial efficiency. Therefore, the study on supply chain management of the
processing unit was taken up to provide insight into the strengths and
weakness of the supply chain in the processing unit. The data relating to
production and post harvest practices followed by the farmers was collected
from the sample farmers in the Ramanagara district. Mother Dairy Fruit &
Vegetable Processing Pvt Ltd., is a modern fruit processing unit situated at
Khajisonenahalli, White Field Highway, Bangalore district, Karnataka state. It
is subsidiary unit of NDDB. The results indicated that, the age of the mango
orchard is an important factor which is responsible for producing quality fruits.
48 per cent of the orchards belonging to farmers were of more than 30 years of
age. Most of the sample farmers did not follow recommended production
practices only 8 per cent of the farmers followed fertilizer application. Most of
the sample farmers did not follow ripening and storage practices accounting for
96 per cent and 94 per cent respectively. The major constraints faced by the
sample farmers in following effective production and post harvest practices
were high labour charges and lack of technical guidance accounting for 96 per
cent. There is positive correlation between the economic constraints faced by
the farmers in following effective production and post harvest practices and the
post harvest losses incurred in the field. Farmers were not satisfied in selling
the produce in APMC market because of high commission charges and
unauthorized deductions accounting for 100 per cent and 96 per cent
respectively. The ripening and storage practices were not as per standards and
were given least score of 1 and 2 respectively out of 5 points. Major constraints
faced by the processing unit are sourcing of quality raw material, poor
production and post harvest practices followed by the farmers, high
competition from other mango processing firms in purchasing the fruits.
