Description The present investigation entitled “Effect of polyamines on fruit retention, yield and quality of mango (Mangifera indica L.) cv. Kesar” was conducted at N.M.C.A. Farm and laboratory of Centre of Excellence on Post-harvest Technology, ASPEE College of Horticulture and Forestry, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari during the year 2012- 2013. The experiment comprising of ten treatments and three repetitions was laid out in randomized block design (RBD). The different polyamine treatments were T1 – Spermine 0.1mM; T2 – spermine 0.01mM; T3 – Spermine 0.05mM; T4 – Putrescine 0.1mM; T5 – Putrescine 0.01mM; T6 – Putrescine 0.05mM; T7 – Spermidine 0.1mM; T8 – Spermidine 0.01mM; T9 – Spermidine 0.05mM; T10 – Control (No spray). Mango trees of cultivar Kesar were sprayed twice i.e. once at pea stage and 20 days thereafter. Application of polyamines had a significant impact on most of the parameters included in the study except fruit breadth, fruit specific gravity, ascorbic acid and non reducing sugars.

Of the different polyamines, spermine 0.01mM emerged as the best treatment with regard to fruit retention and yield parameters like number of fruits per panicle, number of fruits per tree and total yield. It increased fruit retention by 30.5 per cent and yield by 48 per cent over control. However, when it came to fruit quality, putrescine 0.1mM minimized physiological loss in weight (%), titrable acidity (%), spoilage (%), increased fruit firmness (kg/cm2) and registered higher organoleptic scores. Higher TSS (0Brix), reducing sugars (%), total sugars (%), total carotenoids (mg/100g pulp) and shelf life (days) were observed in the same treatment. It increased the shelf life by around 4 days over control (15days). Hence, it can be concluded that for higher yield, spermine can be sprayed at a concentration of 0.01mM and for improved quality putrescine 0.1mM can be applied to Mango cv. Kesar. They can be used either alone or in conjunction to satisfy the production demand or quality requirements of a particular market.
