Description field and laboratory experiments were conducted at National Seed
Project, UAS, Bangalore during kharif 2012-13 to study the effect of nutrient
management for maximization of seed yield and quality in maize hybrid (Zea
mays L.)-Hema. The study comprised of 12 treatment combinations and
replicated thrice and another experiment i.e. standardization of screen size for
better seed quality consisted of 5 treatments and four replications. The results
revealed that among the different nutrient levels application of 125% N and P
(187.5:93.75:40 NPK kgha-1 + ZnSo4 @ 10 kgha-1) recorded highest plant hight
at 60 and 90 DAS (166.65 and 178.32 cm), cob length (16.27 cm), cob diameter
(13.99 cm), bulk seed yield (2805 kg ha-1) and graded seed yield (2565 kg ha-1).
Application of 150% N and P (225:112.5:40 NPK kg ha-1 + ZnSO4 10 kg ha-1)
recorded highest seed quality parameters like seed germination (96.58%), mean
seedling length (23.60 cm), mean seedling dry weight (64.48 mg), SVI-I and II
(2279 and 6227).
Among the different time of applications, N application at four splits
(40% at Basal + 30% at 8 leaf stage + 25% at tasseling + 5% at seed filling
stage) recorded highest plant height at 60 and 90 DAS (167.18 and 176.88 cm),
cob length (16.43 cm), cob diameter (14.17 cm), bulk seed yield (2858 kg ha-1),
graded seed yield (2583 kg ha-1) and seed quality parameters like germination
(97.25%), mean seedling length (23.70 cm), mean seedling dry weight (64.37
mg), SVI-I and II (2304 and 6260).
Among the different sieve sizes viz., 6.75 mm (R,) 6.40 mm (R), 6.25 mm
(R) and 6.00 mm (R). The highest seed quality parameters such as seed index
(29.06 g), seed size (5.22 mm3), germination (98.00%), mean seedling length
(19.00 cm), mean seedling dry weight (74.25 mg), SVI-I and II (1862 and 7277)
was recorded in 6.75 mm (R) sieve size compared to all other sieve sizes but
highest seed recovery (92.31 %) was obtained in 6.00 mm (R) sieve size.
