Description A field experiment conducted in the black soils of
the Directorate of Rice Research, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad,
consisted of two methods of irrigation, namely, continuous
submergence (I1 ) and intermittent method of submergence (I2 )
and three levels of Nitrogen and three levels of P2o5 as
subtreatments for a rice culture of IET 9015. Improvement in
the soil physical conditions, namely, degree of aggregation by
18.8%, mean weight diameter by 9.5%, hydraulic conductivity by
13. 5% and total porosity by 1. 5%, observed at harvest under
the I 2 treatment as compared to I 1 treatment. A reduction in
soil bulk density of 4. 6% was also observed under 12 as
compared· to I 1 treatment. Increased levels of fertilizer
application improved the soil physical parameters but the
interaction was not found to be significant. Root parameters,
namely, root number, root dry weight, and root biomass were
found highest in I 1 treatment while the root length was
highest under the I2 treatment. Root parameters and nutrient
uptake were recorded highest at N150P90 . Uptake of Nitrogen,
P2o5 and K2o found to be highest under I 1 as compared to Ii at
all the l~vels of fertilizer application. A mean grain yieli
of 4609 kg ha-1 was recorded under I 1 as against 4284 kg haunder
I 2 , which was only 7.6% increase over the I 2 treatment.
In the present investigation, intermittent method of
submergence was found to be better in improving the soil
physical conditions in rice soils as compared to that of
continuous submergence.
