Description STUDIES ON GENETIC VARIABILITY, HERITABILITY AND GENETIC ADVANCE FOR YIELD AND QUALITYTRAITS OF INDIGENOUS GENOTYPES OF ASH GOURD [Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn.] OF CHHATTISGARH
The present investigation was conducted during the year 2016-17 at Research cum Instructional Farm, Indira Gandhi KrishiVishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G.). The experiment was comprised of forty six genotypes of ash gourd and laid out in randomized block design (RBD) with three replications. Data were analysed to work out the variability, correlation coefficient, path analysis and genetic divergence for the characters for yield and its component character.
The analyses of variance revealed that mean sum of squares due to genotypes were highly significant for all characters, which indicated that the presence of variability in the genotypes. Highest yield was found in genotype IAG 25 and earliest flowering noted in genotype IAG 24.Higher heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean were observed for ,number of seeds per fruit, fruit yield per hectare, 100 seed weight, average fruit weight, fruit length ,number of fruits per plant, fruit girth, number of branches per plant, node number of first male flower appears, node number of first female flower appears and T.S.S.Correlation studies revealed that Fruit yield q per hectare showed highly significant and positive correlation with number of branches per plant, fruit length, fruit girth, average fruit weight, number of fruit per plant, TSS, 100 seed weight, fibre content and vitamin C at both phenotypic and genotypic levels and with days to fruit set only at genotypic levels only.Path coefficient analysis revealedthatduration of crop showedthe highestpositivedirecteffectonfruityieldfollowedbyaverage fruit weight, node number of first female flower appears, number of branches per plant, days to firstfemale flower appears, number of fruits per plant, days to 50% flowering, fibre content, number of seed per fruit, fruit girth and vitamin C hadsignificant positive direct on fruit yield The divergence analysis revealed the presence of appreciable amount of genetic diversity in the tested genotype forty six genotypes were grouped into six clusters. The intra and inter cluster distance were computed for all the clusters. The result indicated that the genotypes belongs the cluster III viz. IAG-20, IAG-25, IAG-29 and Pusa ujjawal)may be utilized as parents for hybridization in future breeding programmes. Inter crossing of genotypes from diverse clusters showing superior mean performance may help in obtaining higher fruit yield per plant with growth and fruit characters of lead components in ash gourd for Chhattisgarh plains.
