Description Seed inoculation of phosphorus solubilizing bacteria ensures constant supply of phosphorus to soybean by solubilizing the fixed phosphorus. An investigation in pot culture on “Response of phosphorus levels and PSB inoculation on nutrient uptake and yield of soybean in normal and saline soil”, was conducted in kharif 2010 to ascertain the possibility of reducing the phosphorus dose of soybean by intervention of PSB seed inoculation. The results indicated that the highest yield of soybean was obtained in the treatment with RDN + 100 % P2O5 + PSB seed inoculation. The soybean grain and straw yield obtained in the treatment RDN + 75 % P2O5 + PSB seed inoculation in normal and saline soil were at par with the RDN + 100 % P2O5 + PSB seed inoculation treatment, indicating that 25 per cent phosphorus fertilizer dose could be reduced by PSB seed inoculation for obtaining comparable yields with the recommended dose of phosphorus. The nodule number and soil available nitrogen status were also influenced by seed inoculation of PSB. The soil phosphorus status was also observed to be maintained by PSB seed inoculation in normal and saline soil, which may be due to P solubilization by PSB culture throughout the crop growth period. It can therefore, be concluded that recommended dose of N and K and 75 % of recommended dose of P2O5 along with and PSB seed inoculation is an optimum dose of fertilizer for obtaining optimum yield of soybean in normal and saline soil and for maintaining soil fertility.
