Description Subeejam Shushereto Jaayaty Sapadayaty” means the good seed in a
good field produces abundantly. Tomato is the world’s largest vegetable crop and
known as protective food because of its special nutritive value and its wide spread
production. During 2003-04 the vegetable seed market in India was valued to be
around $40 million, of which tomato alone accounted for 20 per cent. The
objectives of the study were to estimate the market size, analysing the market
share of the players and to evaluate the factors influencing purchase decision. The
required data for the study were collected from a random sample of 60 farmers, 20
nurserymen and 20 seed retailers. The market size of the tomato seed in the district
was around 769 kgs and the value was around 4.35 crores. The growth of the
market during the year 2004-10 was negative, because the market size depends on
various factors like price of the tomato, demand for the tomato, price of other
vegetables etc. Among the players in the segment of tomato seed business, US
Agri had the major share of 42 percent, followed by Syngenta and Namdhari with
the share of 27.3 and 5.09 percent respectively. Purchase decision of farmers to
buy a particular brand of seed is influenced by its suitability to season, varieties,
previous experience, Nurserymen’s recommendation and fellow farmers’
recommendation. Similarly, purchase decision of nurserymen to buy a particular
brand of seed is influenced by its Germination count, Marketability of seedlings,
varieties, suitability to season, demand for seedlings and Margin. The
characteristics of good Hybrids as opined by respondents are best quality, higher
yield, higher price, resistance and more demand.
