India is the world's second largest populated country with a population of
1.241 billion in the year 2011. The state of Karnataka has a population of
61.09 million in the same year. The economic growth, changes in taste and
preferences and urbanization had resulted in changing consumption pattern across the
country. For Karnataka, the per capita annual consumption of milk, meat and egg
Were 49.26 litres, 7.4 kg and 26.84 numbers respectively in 2010 (NSSO, 65th round
2009-10). The group "egg, fish and meat", on the other hand, had a share of
5.7 per cent in rural and 3.6 per cent in urban consumer expenditure (NSSO, 2009-10).
The all-India average revealed the divergence in patterns of consumption among
different regions of the country. Hence, it is necessary to study the consumption
pattern of both rural and urban consumers separately under the changing situations of
liberalization, privatization and globalization, as it would provide better opportunities
for planning, production, distribution and marketing strategies.
