Description |
The total Indian production of mutton and goat flesh was of the order of 0.40 million tones of which 0.17 million tones (42.50 per cent) was from sheep and 0.23 million tones (57.50 per cent) was from goats in the year 1972 according to Lal (1976). Mazenc (1974) stated that supply and demand was cyclical and seasonal and that the latter feature was responsible for the fluctuations in middle men's margins. The efficiency in the marketing system has an overall influence on the supply of mutton, its price and its wholesomeness. The marketing organisations for mutton are weak and thus create conditions conducive for intermediaries to play a major role. This study was planned to help in identifying some of the problems, to suggest measures for improving existing practices.
