Description Cros.ing progra"u"e between the genetically variable
36 male lines and 3 lIIale sterile lines were taken follOwing
a 1 x t lIIating design during 1977. The resultant crosses
along with their parents were raised at Navsari, Broach and
Surat durlng Kharif 1978 with a view to investigate the
heterosis, genetlc divergence, per se performance, combining
ability, g x e interaction and stability of performanc:e.
Highest manifestation of heterosis was observed in
I
the cros.es illS 2077 x M 13 and ms 2077 x M 28 for grain yield
and for number of grains per plant, ms 2077 x M 11 and
ms 2077 x M 28 for panicle length and ms 36 x M 25 for 100
grain weight.
The high heterotic responce appeared in the crosses,
was as a result of the better parents obsexved in the per se
perfo1i1iance. Assessment of genetic divergence of parental
lines indicated that high manifestation of heterosis for
yield and its component appeared in the crosses involving
genotypes namely M 1, M 11, M 13, M 25 and M 28 as males
with ms 2077 which were grouped into different clusters
with high 'D' values.
From the combining ability analys i s , additive t ype

of gene aetion was found to be important for all the
characters exeept in plant height. Speeific combining
ability was observed to be more stable than gca . studies
also showed that gca effect was highly correlated with the
per ~ performance. Interestingly promising parent al lines
were proved as good combiners.
The g x e components were substantially smal ler
than the genotypic components. Hybrids were more stable as
compared to parents. Among parents, female line s were observed
to be slightly unstable. The hybrids with me 36 were hi ghly
sensitive to the environmental variation. Hybrid me 2077 x
M 13 was most stable whereas ms 2077 x M 28 exhibited good
yield performance under unfavourable environments increasing
its yielding ability under f avourable environments. The
g x e interaction of hybrids was gr eat er i n the linear
component. The hybrids showed higher mean perfo1mance with
higher regression slope than t he mean of their r espective
parents which indicated t hat the heterosis is generally
associated with greater sensi t i vity t o t he environments.
These finding suggested that t he parental lines
which were sensitive t o environment coul d be improved by
further selection upon t hem. The hybrids ms 2077 x 'M 1 ~ and
ms 2077 x H 28 which resulted f rom bet ter parents wer e
observed to be good yielders under different environment al
conditions.
