are 112 ICDS Projects in Andhra Pradesh. Marpally ICDS
(Rural) Project from Ranga Reddy district and Hyderabad ICDS
(Urban) project from Hyderabad district were selected. S
Anganwadi Centres from each project were selected. From each
project SO ICDS children, 2S women beneficiaries and 2S
committee members were selected. Also S6 functionaries from
the Urban project and 54 from rural project were selected.
Children from Non-ICDS areas were selected for comparison
viz., 50 from urban area and SO from rural area.
The design adopted for the study was ex-post-facto
research design. The variables studied were nutritional
status, immunization status, intelligence quotients (I.Q),
awareness, opinion, participation, age, education,
experience, training and socio-economic status.
Important findings of the study are :
1. Majority of women beneficiaries of urban and rural
areas were under medium age group and had low socio-economic
status.
2. Majority of women beneficiaries of urban and rural
areas had medium awareness about ICDS schPme and aware . about
different aspects of IcDS scheme except for date of starting
and objectives of ICDS programme, committee members of urban
and rural areas had low awareness and not aware about
different aspects of the ICDS Scheme.
3. The women beneficiaries had high opinion towards the
ICDS scheme whereas the committee members of urban and rural
areas had low opinion towards the ICDS Scheme. The women beneficiaries and committee members of
urban and rural areas had low participation in the ICDS
Scheme.
5. The functionaries had medium to high opinion towards
the !CDS Scheme.
6. The functionaries were under medium age group, high
school and intermediate educated, had 4-6 years experience
and job course trained.
7. The nutritional status of !CDS children was better
and the percentage of children under normal category higher
in !CDS groups of urban and rural areas than the Non-ICDS
groups. The occurence of dificiencies signs were less in ICDS
groups than the Non-ICDS groups.
8. The coverage of different vaccines was high in !CDS
groups than the Non-ICDS groups of urban and rural areas.
9. The Intelligence quotient (I.Q) scores of ICDS
children were higher than the Non-ICDS children of urban and
rural areas. The percentage of children in bright category
were high in ICDS groups than in Non-ICDS groups.
10. Lack of proper supervison of work of AWWs, irregular
visits of ANM and Health staff and improper running of preschool
were the problems expressed by women beneficiaries and
committee members.
11. Lack of incentives and rewards for good work, high
stregnth of AWC, insufficient house rent for AWC,
insufficient pi:e,school equipement, in sufficient honorarium
for AWWs, more number of AWCs, alloted to each supervisor,
non-cooperation of parents and elders of the community and
water scarcity were the problems expressed by functionaries.
From the results of the present study it was
inferred that ICDS scheme has made an impact for the
integrated development of children. However, in the areas
,~.ike medium to low opinion, low participation by women
beneficiaries and the committee members, occurence of
dificiency diseases etc. should be taken care by
administrators while considering the suggestions given by
both women beneficiaries I committee members and
functionaries for better functioning of the ICDS Scheme.
