The Indian livestock sector occupies the place of prime importance in Indian economy. This is because, 70 per cent of Indian population still depends on agriculture for its livelihood. The livestock is largest source of regular income and employment for rural population next to agriculture. Livestock sector is constantly gaining economic importance in Indian economy. India has 185 million cattle, 98 million buffaloes, 124 million goats, 61 million ships and 489 million poultry birds (Anonymous 2003).
