Description |
Fieldbean, Lablab purpureas L. which is also called as, dolichos bean or hyacinth bean belongs to family Fabaceae is native of India and mainly cultivated as an inter crop with cereals. It is presently grown through out the tropical parts of Asia, Africa, West Indies, China and India. Crop is grown for its fresh green pods which are used as a vegetable, dry seeds for preparations of various dishes and as fodder for livestock. In India, Lablab is field crop grown in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Kerala and Maharashtra. In Karnataka, the total area under this crop was 0.77 lakh hectares with an annual production of 0.17 lakh tonnes with a productivity of 183 kg per ha (Anon., 2008). Though the crop is cultivated in almost all regions of Karnataka, it is largely grown as a mixed crop with finger millet and sorghum mainly in Kolar, Bengaluru, Mandya, Mysore, Tumkur, Shimoga, Haveri, Belgaum and Hassan districts. However, it is also grown as pure crop under rain fed as well as irrigated conditions. Fieldbean has its own value in dietary schedule of people of developing countries. The green pods contain a small amount of vitamin A, C, proteins, iron and rich in calcium. However, they contain small amounts of cynogenic glycosides in raw state. The nutritive quality of fieldbean is better than that of French bean (Aykroyd., 1963). The ripe seed contains 20 to 28 per cent of protein (Schaaffhausen, 1963). |
