Description An expost—facto research design wasfollowed in ninevillagesofthreemandalsselected
fromRangaReddydistricttostudythepersonal,Socio—economic and psychological characters along with problems ofbiogas beneficiaries, to find outthelevel ofknowledge and identify theextentofadoption ofbiogas 'plants by the beneficiaries. A total of I20 biogas beneficiaries were selected asrespondentsforthepresentstudy. They wereinterviewedusingastructured pretested schedule. The main findings ofthe study are asfollows: Majority ofthe beneficiaries were middle aged, functionally literates, scheduledcastesandscheduledtribesbelongedtoafamilysizeof4-6members, they hadmedium landholdingandmediumannual income.Theircontactwith extension personal was very low and exposure to mass media was medium. Cattle possessed by the beneficiaries was not optimum when compared with family size, capacity of biogas plant installed. They had average attitude towards the use of biogas plants.
Majority ofthe beneficiaries had average knowledge related to biogas plants. Thirty per cent ofthebeneficiaries haddiscontinued the useofbiogas plants. The extent of adoption of recommended practices was medium with almost all the beneficiaries. Common reasons stated for discontinued usage are easy availability of otherfuels, non-availability ofsufficient cattledungforfeedingthepl . ant andnon—recti fication of defects of the plant. Most common problems faced bybiogasbene ficiarieswereinsufficientgasproduced duringrainyseason, rustingof the gas holder and gas leakage at the plant. All the beneficiaries hnd expressed that there was lack ofrepair facilities. Based on theproblems expressed by the beneficiaries, theirsuggestionsand observations ofthe investigator, the following suggestions weremadefor better utilization ofbiogas plants. Guidance should be givemto rural people adopting biogas plants inselection ofappropriate capacity ofbiogas plant based on number ofcattle available and gas requirement according to their family size. Awarenesshadtobecreatedamongthebeneficiariesabouttheexistenceof “district biogas cell” which is located at district head quarters. Thisawareness will enable the bene ficiaries to have access to the informationrequired for proper maintenance of the plants as well as access to trained personnel capable ofrepairing the defects in the plants. Monitoring and periodical checking of biogas plants by extension personnel related toNPBD should be done after installation ofplants. Local.peoplefromthevillages shouldbetrainedsothatrepairfacilitiesare easily available. Trainingcoursesshouldbeconductedtousersincludingdemonstrations on cleaning ofburners and switches ofbiogas stove as well as the steps to be taken for maintenance ofthe plant properly. Educational programme emphasizing the various advantages of using biogas plants when compared with traditional methods ofcooking is needed to develop positive attitude in the rural people towards the use of biogas plants, Stepsshouldbetakenforrevivalofunusedplants, asthediscontinuance of the use of biogas plants hinder other people in the village in adopting biogas plants.
